KARTAVYA is story about Karan (Sanjay Kapoor) and his mother Sharda Verma (Moushmi
Chaterjee). Karan meets Kajal (Juhi Chawla) daughter of Ramakant Sahay (Saeed
jaffery) in college, they both fall in love. Both of their parents decide them
to be formally engaged. On the engagement day Mayor Bishambar Chowdhary, on
being introduced to Sharda Verma, insults her by saying that Karan is not her
legitimate son, with this Sharda suffers a massive heart attack. Before she dies
she confides her secretes to Karan & then Karan plans to unveil the mystery of
his existence. In his Battle he confronts with Ugranarayan Singh (Amrish Puri),
his sons Balbir (Mohnish Behl) and Bhanu (Ashwin Kaushal). He is beaten up by
Balbir and Bhanu. He meets Ghulam Rasool (Om Puri), who reveals the past of
Gayatri (Aruna Irani) and Ugranarayan Singh which enrages Karan & he begins
eliminating the wrong doers one by one and finally eliminates Ugranarayan
thereby fulfiling his "Kartavya".
