Swati is the story of Sharada (Sharmila Tagore), an unfortunate woman deserted
by her lover and left to fend for herself and her unborn child. She struggles to
raise her daughter Swati, (Meenakshi Sheshadri), who is ostracized by society
because she is illegitimate. Swati tries to take on the so-called 'protectors of
society' to earn back respect for her mother and herself, but constantly faces
all kinds of opposition. Fate brings her way Ram Mohan (Akbar Khan), a
communist, who suggests that Swati should consider getting her mother married as
she still deserves a chance at true happiness. Swati plays matchmaker and
convinces Sharada to marry Doctor (Shashi Kapoor) in whose hospital Sharada has
worked many years. A kind and just man who is well aware of Sharada's trying
circumstances. Along with a new father Swati also gets a loving sister, Anandi (Madhuri
Dixit). But suddenly a twist of fate plunges Swati back into confusion and
despair. She is forced to question her decision to get her mother married. What
could it be that can devastate Swati and threaten her mother's new- found
